About Encaustics
My encaustic work is accomplished by applying multiple layers of wax upon handcrafted wooden panels. These unique surfaces create a depth; one that resembles polished stone, cracked pottery, or ethereal space. The word encaustic means, "to burn in." The time consuming artistic process, used in first and second centuries A.D. Egypt for Fayum funeral portraits, is highly durable and still on view in museums today.
